During a post-pandemic series of site visits and phone interviews, plywood and veneer manufacturing operators articulated the common concern of “We don’t have enough people to run the mill on a full schedule.” Several expressed surprise and disappointment because experienced employees failed to return, and few job seekers applied. Owners often increased wages and added monetary and non-monetary incentives, but still did not attract enough workers. One concluded, “You know, this younger generation is just different.”

TAKING STOCK: The Panel Industry Moves Ahead

As I glanced through the pages of the six issues of Panel World in 2022, various news developments refreshed my memory, but underlying it all was just the fact that business for the most part was conducted as usual. That we were back to at least fairly normal hit home at the biennial PELICE in March in Atlanta, where the crowd was obviously enthusiastic to be back in the mainstream. Other events throughout the year proved it as well—from annual meetings to trade shows, and also because our editors were being welcomed back into the mills to work up articles.

‘Six-Way Staffing’ Could Be The Answer For Your Mill

During a post-pandemic series of site visits and phone interviews, plywood and veneer manufacturing operators articulated the common concern of “We don’t have enough people to run the mill on a full schedule.” Several expressed surprise and disappointment because experienced employees failed to return, and few job seekers applied. Owners often increased wages and added monetary and non-monetary incentives, but still did not attract enough workers. One concluded, “You know, this younger generation is just different.”

This article, drawing upon practical mill examples as well as academic research, suggests six action steps to mitigate and even resolve the current mill staffing challenges. Each individual step will improve personnel recruiting and retention and, if implemented together, the positive impact will be magnified. While these time-tested techniques are not exhaustive or “one size fits all,” hopefully these ideas stimulate creative thinking that directly applies to the local conditions of your operation.

States Industries Presses Ahead For Its Customers

Article by Dan Shell, Senior Editor, Panel World

EUGENE, Oregon – Investments and upgrades at States Industries’ manufacturing operations have made the company more competitive and increased customer focus on value creation by responding to market needs. The company promotes its close customer relationships and working with customers to custom build panels and panel components that perfectly fit customer needs.

At Eugene, the company’s manufacturing facilities produce a wide variety of panels including hardwood plywood, wall paneling, commercial panels and also pre-cut and machined components available from the value-added facility adjacent the panel mill.

New Con-Vey robotics line boosts quality, safety.

A new four-opening short cycle Biele Group press started up in early 2021 has the plant streamlining its 3-ply production, allowing it to focus closely on customers with high-end demands while increasing overall quality and reducing downfall.

The customer-focused hardwood producer has also invested in robotics as part of a key quality control process that allows employs to work safer and concentrate on quality and not on handling panels.

Ted Downs, VP of Manufacturing, notes that States Industries approaches the market differently than many producers: Instead of relying on log conversion for a significant part of its operating margin, States Industries relies on close customer relationships that involve engineering the best products to meet customer needs in their own operations and markets. “We all care about the customer, yet we come at it in different ways,” he says. “But the anchor point of what makes us go is truly customer first.”

You might say Louisiana-Pacific has been playing at the same Houlton site near New Limerick in Aroostook County, for 40 years. And you might add that LP has played three distinct styles of ball during that period.

Scotch Plywood Starts Up Veneer Mill

Article by Dan Shell, Senior Editor, Panel World

WAYNESBORO, Mississippi – Executives and key individuals with Scotch Plywood made a commitment to rebuild before the ashes had cooled following a January 6, 2021 fire here at a key veneer production facility. Thanks to a monumental effort by all involved, from Scotch Plywood owners and management and employees, vendors and log suppliers, the veneer plant was peeling logs again in March 2022.

That the project was pulled off so successfully and smoothly under tough operating conditions is a testament to the Scotch plywood organization: The icing on the cake is the new facility here has hit the ground running and recently set plant production records for shift and day, along with improved veneer quality.

Scotch Plywood does most of its peeling at Waynesboro. The facility produces anywhere from two-thirds to three-quarters of Scotch Plywood’s overall green veneer requirements. Scotch’s Beatrice, Alabama veneer plant has a lathe and one dryer, and the Fulton plywood plant has two dryers plus layup, pressing and finishing. Keeping all the moving parts in place for such an organization and process were critical.

“It was real important to keep all the landowners, suppliers and employees working with us,” says Charles Bradford, Scotch Plywood VP of Procurement. “We tried to keep everyone busy and working, including the loggers.”

Letting the Beatrice plant pick up the slack in veneer production was key to maintaining the Waynesboro plant’s operational infrastructure. Employees were bussed from Waynesboro to the Beatrice plant and back every day as the facility ran almost around the clock to keep veneer moving.

Murphy Co. Puts Foster Veneer Mill In Motion

Article by Dan Shell, Senior Editor, Panel World

FOSTER, Oregon – Smart investments and key upgrades have Murphy Company’s veneer plant producing better quality veneer, more efficiently. The facility is a key regional producer and merchandiser of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and plywood veneers. The Foster Veneer mill supplies Murphy plywood and LVL manufacturing facilities and other regional EWP producers as a major source of strength-graded veneer.

Acquired in late 2017 from Weyerhaeuser, the plant is a complementary fit to Murphy Company’s vertically integrated manufacturing facilities. The six facilities include three veneer mills supporting a LVL plant and two plywood mills producing a full complement of hardwood and softwood plywood. According to Mike Don, Murphy General Manager, Veneer Operations, the Foster plant is strategically located in the heart of the greater West Coast veneer market that stretches from northern California to British Columbia.

The key component of the business plan for Foster Veneer is to function as a major regional veneer merchandising operation, Don says. “Out peeling and drying operations are targeted to supply the engineered wood products industry, while at the same time merchandising each piece of veneer to its highest end value.”

He adds that while the facility has a range of capabilities, and produces a variety of veneers, the focus is primarily Douglas fir 1/8 in. LVL-quality, strength-graded veneer. As an added bonus, the wood basket for their operation is on the west slope of the Cascades, known for its high-strength Douglas fir resource.

According to Don, the plant has received significant investment since being acquired by Murphy. These investments have not necessarily been changes to the process, but rather in upgrading the existing equipment and making sure it functions to its full potential. “The story here is more about sticking with the fundamentals, getting everything up to operating order, and optimizing the performance of what we have,” he says.

Producers Navigated Changing OSB Market Dynamics During Past Two Years

During the past two years, North America’s OSB producers have rallied through a worldwide health crisis and record-setting structural panel prices after a brief pandemic-induced market downturn. Initial uncertainties surrounding the novel coronavirus compelled some companies to temporarily reduce OSB production and capital expenditures. Almost simultaneously, one of the biggest surprises was a surge in remodeling and DIY markets as more consumers had more money and more time on their hands at home.

Ingenuity, Innovation Within The Veneer-Based Industry: A Report From The Field

Ingenuity and innovation have been the lifeblood of the veneer-based industry since its inception more than 100 years ago. However, during recent decades the competitive matching of costs and features with competing products has slowed. Substitutes, such as oriented strandboard (OSB) and other wood and non-wood materials, have significantly reduced North American demand for plywood.

Roseburg Picks Up LVL Pace At Chester

Article by Jessica Johnson, Senior Associate Editor, Panel World

CHESTER, South Carolina – Despite a few technical glitches during startup, and while muscling through a global pandemic, Chester Engineered Wood is a go for Roseburg.

The industry looked on as Roseburg built its greenfield southern yellow pine (SYP) laminated veneer lumber (LVL) mill in South Carolina – the company’s first greenfield project in the U.S. South, though having acquired several panel plants in the South through the years and maintaining operations in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Nestled not far from major cities in the Carolinas – Charlotte is just 40 miles away, and Columbia, SC is 60 miles – Chester, SC is positioned well to serve the bustling metro areas that are seeing housing starts shoot through the roof.

Chester Engineered Wood came online at the onslaught of the pandemic, which, combined with the unique challenges that a startup presents, made for an interesting time. Plant manager Mike Henry, who was at another Roseburg facility in the South before coming to Chester, says the extra challenges put additional pressure on a lot of people, but in the end, being creative and liking to solve problems, Henry and his management team hit the quality production the company was aiming for when the facility was constructed – it just took longer than expected to get there.
