Con-Vey Appoints New Panel Products Manager

Con-Vey named Brent Hensley as Product Manager for Panel Products. This new designation is essential to supporting increased initiatives and continued growth for Con-Vey’s panel product segments, including OSB, plywood, LVL, OSL, fiber panels, mineral composite panels, and CLT. Hensley began as sales representative at Con-Vey in 2017 and quickly became a leader in the department. His experience managing teams for over a decade in the financial industry as well as a technical sales role at another engineering and manufacturing company prior to Con-Vey led to his quick ascent to Product Manager.

TSI Offers Dryer Replacement Plan

For many years TSI has been steadily upgrading its clients’ dryer fleets with new drums and other improvements, like flat-back elbows. The requirement is usually to fit a new drum into the same space as the existing drum and to improve both quality and productivity.

TSI’s single-pass system with its internal drum flighting is often able to deliver a significant bump in production volume (usually around 10% or more) when replacing older drums (especially triple pass design). The flighting also has the advantage that it will allow the chips or strands to classify within the drum meaning that the range of moisture tolerance of the product coming out of the drum will often see a significant improvement. Upgrades such as flat back elbows reduce pressure drop, meaning the fan will gain some extra capacity. Modular construction of the drum enables it to be delivered in sections that bolt together on site for easier access in tight “brownfield” conditions and reduced downtime for installation.

TSI can further improve the situation by adding exhaust gas recycle to the system taking spent gas from the exhaust and adding it back to the dryer inlet as blend gas. This not only increases thermal efficiency it also increases humidity which produces a better conditioning of the strand, or chip. It can help resin consumption, and will result in less absolute emissions and lower volume of gasses going to the pollution control system. If the pollution control system is a bottleneck, this can breathe new capacity into existing equipment.

With more than 60 such retrofits in the OSB industry alone this is a proven way of increasing plant productivity and product quality without a complete rework of all the existing equipment.

Gruen-Wald Laminates Orders USNR RF Technology

Gruen-Wald Laminates is investing in a new radio frequency (RF) generator and 24 ft. long curing tunnel from USNR for its fingerjoint line at its plant in Tea, SD. This is the second tunnel at the plant, and the new equipment will provide increased capacity. The equipment is scheduled to be installed in the third quarter.

Gruen-Wald produces engineered building components for many industries including residential, commercial, and civil construction, production and storage facilities for farming.

USNR is a leading supplier of systems for the manufacture of engineered wood products using RF gluing technology, dating back several decades. The RF generator produces radio waves used to create a field with alternating polarity, through which the wood and glue pass. Glue molecules are alternately attracted to one electrode or the other and become heated by the friction generated by this molecular agitation. Thermosetting glues become cured within seconds of reaching the elevated temperature, so glued joints can be handled in minutes instead of hours or days.

Another advantage is the glue begins curing throughout the joint instead of working in from the outside surfaces. For dimensional lumber sizes, hot oil or steam-heated platens would take much longer for the heat to get to the middle of the joint.

Custom Engineering Is A World Leader In Heated Platens

Custom Engineering is one of the world’s largest suppliers of precision machined controlled temperature platens. In addition to shipping to all 50 states, Custom Engineering ships to customers in South America, Europe, Japan, China and India.

Custom Engineering manufactures platens as small as 12 in. square for use in laboratory presses, and as large as 10 ft. x 52 in. for board and panel presses. Typical heater or cooling sources include electric, steam, water and thermal fluid.

Custom Engineering’s press platens are used for applications as simple as cooling molds after curing and as high tech as hot forming of titanium and composites at 1700°F.

Maintaining square and flat platens is critical to operational efficiencies. When platens become nicked, bent, gouged or damaged, they will produce imperfections in the end product. Often this will lead to additional costly finishing operations like additional sanding of particleboard. Custom repairs all types of platens restoring them to original specifications.

Plywood Mills Eye Modernizations

Modernizations are a rapidly expanding trend in the plywood manufacturing business. “Companies have increasingly become more cost-aware, and therefore interested in improving their present machinery through modernizations as an alternative to new investments,” comments Petri Lakka, Group Vice President of Raute Technology Services.

At Raute, the growing interest around modernization projects has been earmarked. “Today customers want different options for their investments—some focus on acquiring new assets, but some are looking for cost-efficient modernizations for their production lines. Peeling line modernizations have been and still are the largest section of all modernization projects; modernizing a peeling line tends to be more cost-efficient than purchasing a brand new line,” explains Jussi Puranen, Technology Manager at Raute Finland.

In North America, the focus with peeling line modernizations tends to be on improving the quality and thickness tolerance of veneer, with increasing automation and better usability. “The ability to raise the level of automation is very important to our North American customers, where labor costs are high,” Puranen explains.

The challenge with peeling line modernizations is that it requires an understanding of the total process of veneer, plywood and LVL manufacturing. Raute’s advantage is its process expertise, offering lifespan services for a variety of demands.

A growing number of small service and machine manufacturers have entered the plywood markets, but Puranen sees Raute as able to respond to the tightening competition. “We have inextricably linked equipment manufacturing, sales and services to support our customers.”

Puranen sees modernizations moving from hydraulic solutions towards electric solutions. In addition, the growing demand of peeling line modernizations requires acceleration of the processes.

As of now, the modernization supply chains in this industry are mainly designed for bigger projects, but Puranen predicts a shift towards modernizing of smaller components as well. “We have to be extremely precise in everything we do, and to handle things quickly with minimum bureaucracy. Raute is ready to take on this challenge.”
