Pierce Leads Winston Plywood & Veneer

Pierce Leads Winston Plywood & Veneer

Winston Plywood & Veneer announced that Jon Pierce now serves as President and is overseeing startup and operation of the company’s new plywood mill in Louisville, Miss.

“I have known Jon as a friend and colleague for many years and can say without hesitation, he’s the right man for the job,” states New Wood Resources CEO Kurt Liebich.

Pierce is a longtime member of the Atlas Holdings and New Wood Resources’ family. He was previously president of Olympic Panel Products in Shelton, Wash.

“His (Pierce’s) approach at Olympic was simple; he supported his team by making the safety of every associate his top priority, each and every day. He understands our workplace from the bottom up, having started his career as a project manager over two decades ago. At each stop in his career, his company has been a stronger, safer and more profitable place than when he arrived,” Liebich adds.

Pierce received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from California State University.

Pierce takes over the Winston Plywood role from Liebich, who had been overseeing the plywood mill since Dr. Richard Baldwin’s retirement in September.

“Winston Plywood is the finest plywood facility in North America. Our future is bright,” states Liebich, who will continue his role as New Wood Resources CEO.

Successful Trials Conclude For MDF Waste Recovery

The world’s first ever technology to recycle MDF waste has moved a step closer to reality. MDF Recovery has successfully concluded proof of concept trials to develop a commercially viable process to recover wood fiber from waste MDF.

It is the culmination of more than six years’ research and development to create a technology that will offer the first alternative to the use of landfill or burning to dispose of MDF. Britain, alone, disposes of around 350,000 tons of MDF each year.

The solution generates a new raw material source for the wood/natural fiber industry that reduces the demand on standing forests. The recovered fiber is of the same high quality as virgin wood fiber and provides feedstock to the manufacturers of MDF board, insulation products and horticultural growing products.

Co-founder and managing director Craig Bartlett is now ready to take the proprietary technology to the commercial market. Craig, who established MDF Recovery in 2009, says, “We have already begun discussions with a number of leading companies and organizations operating in the MDF production and waste industries and look forward to progressing these during the early part of 2017.”

“The recycling process we have developed is a genuine world first. There is no other environmentally-friendly alternative to the use of landfill or burning to dispose of MDF waste.”

Sixth Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & Expo Will Be Held April 13-14, 2018

From: Panel World Editors

Organizers have announced that the sixth Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & Expo (PELICE) will be held Friday-Saturday, April 13-14, 2018, and once again in the Grand Ballroom North of the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

PELICE again immediately follows the Wood Bioenergy Conference & Expo, which will be held April 11-12, 2018, also in the Grand Ballroom North. Both events are supported by Panel World and Wood Bioenergy magazines, and Georgia Research Institute.

The 2016 PELICE set a record attendance of 450 industry professionals, including representatives from 32 wood products producer companies. They enjoyed 50 presentations on new project development, production technologies and market forecasts concerning veneer, plywood, OSB, MDF, particleboard and engineered wood products. The event was supported by a record 80 equipment and technology exhibitors, of which 37 exhibited in both the PELICE and Wood Bioenergy events.

Many forecasts expect what has been a gradual improvement in building products sectors to begin snowballing in 2018. Several new mill projects in both the structural and non-structural sectors will be hitting full production mode, and several others will be nearing startup. New developments in new engineered wood products will also be gaining momentum.

The 2018 PELICE will address all of this as well as the latest developments in machinery technologies.

Such momentum generates great anticipation for the 2018 PELICE. Once again, Gold, Silver and Bronze exhibitor sponsorship packages will be offered.

Hatton-Brown Partners With Wood Industry Summit At Ligna

Hall 26 will once again be home to the Wood Industry Summit during Ligna 2017 in Hannover, Germany and Hatton-Brown Publishers is once again an official partner of the event. Hatton-Brown Publishers is affiliated with Panel World, Timber Processing and Wood Bioenergy magazines.

The Summit made a very successful debut in 2015, with international customers achieving an investment volume of some €30 million. As an international meeting place for the primary industry cluster, the Wood Industry Summit features innovative solutions for harvesting and processing and for integrating the various stages of processing.

The Summit is divided into three areas: an exhibition, a forum and a matchmaking hub. Every day from Tuesday, May 23, to Friday, May 26, the forum of the Wood Industry Summit will highlight a topic of current international interest in the industry, with experts from Germany, Austria, Canada, Russia, Sweden and Spain giving presentations and fielding questions from the audience.

The main themes at the Wood Industry Summit 2017 include:
Tuesday, May 23: Forestry 4.0: Vision or Future?
Wednesday, May 24: Development and Infrastructure to Ensure Sustainable Forestry
Thursday, May 25: Forest Fires – Prevention, Detection and Firefighting
Friday, May 26: Fleet Management to Optimize the Logistics Chain from the Forest to the Factory

Exhibition stands located next to the forum will provide an ideal networking environment for exhibitors and visitors. Panel discussions, keynote speeches and the accompanying exhibition will ensure that the 2017 edition of the Wood Industry Summit is once again a major highlight in the primary processing industry’s annual calendar.

Forum participation is free of charge for visitors and delegations, and advance registration is not required.

Ligna will be held May 22-26 at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds. It’s organized by Deutsche Messe AG and German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association.

Sneak Peek At Woodworking Innovations: Ligna 2017 Preview

A sneak peek at some of the new woodworking technology and innovations on display at LIGNA 2017 was given to more than 70 journalists from 28 countries at a special event hosted by show organizer Deutsche Messe. The world’s largest woodworking event, LIGNA will be held May 22-26 in Hannover, Germany.

This year’s LIGNA fair will play host to more than 1,500 exhibitors from 45 nations, with displays spread across more than 1.313 million square feet of display space. The number of visitors to the show is projected to reach 93,000, said Dr. Andreas Gruchow, member of Deutsche Messe’s Management Board.

“LIGNA 2017 is where key solutions and applications will be showcased. It’s where business relationships and networks will be built that will benefit the entire wood industry for years to come,” Gruchow added.

The themes for this year’s event include: Integrated Manufacturing – on the Way to Industry 4.0; Processing of Plastics and Composites; and “Access to Resources and Technology” at the Wood Industry Summit.  “This year, the exhibitors are presenting a wide array of innovations for intelligent networked manufacturing systems, not to mention new ideas and strategies for the many value-creation networks at play in the wood processing and woodworking industries,” he said.

The LIGNA 2017 Preview, held Feb. 14 at the show fairgrounds, also included a presentation from Wolfgang Poschl, chairman of the VDMA Woodworking Machinery division and chairman of the management board of Michael Weinig AG. The VDMA is also an organizer of the LIGNA fair.
